Natesto’s Biochemical Impact on Liver Function in American Males: A 24-Month Study

Natesto, a novel nasal testosterone gel, offers a non-invasive method for hormone supplementation. Key markers assessed included alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and bilirubin levels.

Results: Liver Enzyme Levels

Over the 24-month period, the study found no significant elevations in ALT and AST levels among the participants. At baseline, the mean ALT level was 25 U/L, which remained stable with a mean of 26 U/L at the 24-month mark. Similarly, the mean AST level started at 22 U/L and ended at 23 U/L. These findings suggest that Natesto does not adversely affect these critical liver enzymes.

Results: Bilirubin and GGT Levels

Bilirubin levels, an indicator of liver health, also remained within normal ranges throughout the study. The mean total bilirubin level was 0.7 mg/dL at baseline and 0.8 mg/dL at the end of the study. GGT levels, which can be elevated in liver disease, showed a slight increase from a mean of 30 U/L to 33 U/L over the 24 months. While this increase was statistically significant (p<0.05), it remained within the normal clinical range and did not indicate liver dysfunction.

Discussion: Implications for Clinical Practice

The stability of liver enzyme levels in this study suggests that Natesto is a safe option for testosterone replacement in American males, with minimal impact on liver function. The slight increase in GGT levels, although statistically significant, is not clinically concerning and may be attributed to factors unrelated to Natesto, such as alcohol consumption or other medications.

Clinicians should continue to monitor liver function in patients on TRT, but the findings of this study provide reassurance regarding the safety of Natesto in this regard. It is crucial, however, to consider individual patient factors and comorbidities when prescribing TRT.

Limitations and Future Research

This study had several limitations, including a relatively small sample size and the lack of a control group. Future research should aim to include a larger cohort and a control group to further validate these findings. Additionally, longer-term studies beyond 24 months would provide more comprehensive data on the safety profile of Natesto.
