Preventing and Treating Shoulder Impingement in American Male Swimmers: A 3-Year Study

Results of Preventive Interventions

The group receiving preventive interventions showed a significant reduction in the incidence of shoulder impingement compared to the control group. After three years, only 15% of the preventive group developed impingement, in contrast to 35% in the control group. Key exercises that contributed to this outcome included rotator cuff strengthening and scapular stabilization routines. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating targeted preventive exercises into the training regimens of American male swimmers to mitigate the risk of shoulder impingement.

Outcomes of Treatment Interventions

For swimmers who developed shoulder impingement, the group receiving both preventive and treatment interventions experienced faster recovery times and improved shoulder function compared to the control group. Physical therapy, which included manual therapy and specific rehabilitation exercises, was particularly effective. Additionally, a small subset of participants who received corticosteroid injections reported immediate pain relief, although the long-term benefits were less pronounced. These results highlight the efficacy of a comprehensive treatment approach that combines physical therapy with other modalities as needed.

Beyond the clinical outcomes, our study also assessed the impact of these interventions on the swimmers' performance and quality of life. Participants in the intervention groups reported higher satisfaction with their shoulder health and overall well-being. They also achieved better performance metrics, such as faster swimming times and increased endurance, compared to the control group. This suggests that effective management of shoulder impingement not only alleviates pain but also enhances the athletic performance and quality of life of American male swimmers.
